Janis Joplin by Richard Wallich
I've been listening to Woodstock rebroadcast on satellite radio all weekend. It's nostalgia, longing, relief that I wasn't caught up in the 60s drug scene, all wrapped up in one. My favorite performer was Janis Joplin: loud, brassy, sometimes vulnerable, always determined to get the hell out of Port Arthur, Texas. Watch the Dick Cavett interview.

Two years ago Irene and I stayed in a funky b&b in SF. One of the rooms was called the Joplin room because it was the place Janice J. stayed when she was in the city. We stood in the doorway just to catch a whiff of her aura. (btw: the drugs were good.)
I so loved her music and was devastated when she died. I really related to what she felt about being excluded at school because she was different.
