My Mother's Hands

One of my favorite activities is to provide students with a rough outline modeled on a poem from this collection: My Mother's Hands. They use it to write their own personal homage to their mothers.

To spur them on, I promise that if they complete the project in time for Mother's Day, their moms will cry. For 4th and 5th graders, it just doesn't get any better than that.

You are incredible! (of course this exercise wouldn't have worked with me...my mother never STOPPED crying!)

Poison their souls with poetry. That's my strategy.
